James Allan, Professor of Eastern Art, spent most of his career at the Ashmolean Museum, first as the curator responsible for the Islamic collection and latterly as Keeper of Eastern Art. He established the first graduate degree course in Islamic art and taught Islamic art in the Oriental Faculty at Oxford until his retirement last year. His research focuses on Islamic metalwork, though he has also written books and articles on Islamic architecture
