The four carved ivory panels (1880,0607.1-4) were either set into a door or an item of furniture. They bear the name of the sultan al-Malik al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun (r. 1293–1341) in the stately thuluth script typically used at this time. The 14thcentury traveller Ibn Battuta praised al-Malik al- Nasir for his generous character and commented on his devotion to the two holy sanctuaries of Mecca and Medina. The inscription across two panels: 'izz li mawlana al-sultan Muhammad ibn Qalawun' (Glory to our Lord the Sultan Muhammad ibn Qalawun).
