Curator's comments:

On the origin of this type of metalware: D. Behrens-Abouseif, "Veneto-Saracenic Metalware, a Mamluk Art", Mamluk Studies Review 9 (2005) 147-172.; The 'nisba' suggests that the maker of this tray, or his family, originated in the region of Kurdistan as it seems to read 'al-Kurdi', translating to "the Kurd", as well as stylistic affinities between this piece and other metalwork and carpets from this region according to Allan (1989).
