Hand-towel
BackDescription:
Finely embroidered cotton hand-towel with silk, cotton and silver threads. Ground made of natural cream muslin with a woven diamond-shaped repeat pattern. Identical embroidery panels near each warp end with tassels. Each broad panel comprises scrolling peach flowerheads and stylised blooms (e.g. roses and rosehips) in peach and shades of blue, yellow and green. The centres of the peach flowers are worked in drawn thread embroidery in silver. Leaves and stems are worked in green silk and silver thread (wound around a silk or cotton core).

Many finely embroidered Ottoman period hand-towels were used more for decoration, and often comprised a part of a bride's dowry - the bride would display her hand-worked pieces as a sign of her ability and potential.
