Children’s clothing often imitated adult clothing, both in cut and materials. This striped silk satin coat would probably have been worn by a child from an affluent background as part of an outfit comprised of a shirt or shift, baggy trousers and a sash. In winter, a jacket or cloak made of velvet or woollen broadcloth, often trimmed with fur, would have been worn on top.
